If you're less a linear thinker and more of a big ideas type, conceptual maps may be the note-taking tool for you. The basic idea is pretty simple:
- Start with a blank sheet of paper
- Place the main topic in the center, with a box or circle around it
- Related ideas each get their own box. Show relationships with lines and arrows.
There are a lot of benefits to using a concept map:
- It's easy to see relationships and hierarchies
- Presents a good topic overview
- Easy to add in details and specifics later
- Use icons and symbols to add meaning or context
