IB Taking Notes: Concept Maps

Concept / Mind Maps

If you're less a linear thinker and more of a big ideas type, conceptual maps may be the note-taking tool for you.  The basic idea is pretty simple:

  • Start with a blank sheet of paper
  • Place the main topic in the center, with a box or circle around it
  • Related ideas each get their own box.  Show relationships with lines and arrows.

There are a lot of benefits to using a concept map:

  • It's easy to see relationships and hierarchies
  • Presents a good topic overview
  • Easy to add in details and specifics later
  • Use icons and symbols to add meaning or context
