9 Science: Research Process

Planaria

  • Make a copy of the document - Google or Word
  • Follow my process, including your own thoughts on the sheet as well.
  • Work quietly and with focus 
  • We will move FAST, so stay on track!
  • At the end of class, you will turn in a paragraph with in-text citations

"Soup to Nuts" (the research process from start to finish)

  • Establish guiding questions
    • What do you need to know?
  • Choose sources for introductory information
  • Find & Gather background information
    • Number each source
    • Use quotation marks for cut/pasted information
    • Paraphrase after you fully understand the information 
  • Identify narrower questions, based on new understandings
    • What else do you need to know?
  • Choose sources for specific and scholarly information
    • Which information platforms will be best (databases? news sites?)
    • What types of information do you need: statistics? lab reports? a real person/expert?
  • Gather more focused evidence from those sources 
    • Number each source
    • Use quotation marks for cut/pasted information
    • Paraphrase after you fully understand the information 
  • Organize information into an outline
    • Headings
      • Supporting facts (w/source #)
      • Remember to keep quotation marks around quoted facts
  • Write the paper
    • Include source #s next to facts
    • All facts from other source must have the source number (whether quoted or paraphrased)
  • Create citations for sources used (Noodletools) 
  • Add in-text citations next to the facts in your paper
    • Put whatever comes first in the full citation in parenthesis with the page if there is one
      • EX:   (Rodenbough 15)
