What's Copyright (and why does it matter?)

Being a Copyright-Free creator means honoring the work of others. If you create something, you'd want to control how others may or may not use it, right? It's the same for creators of everything you see on the internet.

Key Terms:

  • Copyright: the creator does not give permission for you to use the item
  • Copyright-free or No copyright: the creator gives some of permission for you to use the item
    • Attribution: the creator REQUIRES that you mention his/her name to give credit
    • No-attribution: the creator does NOT require you to give credit

Films in the SIS Film Festival may only use media that is copyright-free and that specifies that attribution is not necessary (Copyright-Free + No Attribution)

  • If the media you want has a license requiring attribution, you may not use it in the film.
  • The only credits we want to see at the end of your film are the names of the director, actors, script writers, costume, light, and any other crew members.

This page will explain why copyright exists and give you resources to be sure you're within the copyright-free zone.

Searching for Copyright-free content

See the "Copyright-Free Resources" page (left) for websites that host copyright-free media.

Remember to be sure that the item does not require attribution (credit to the creator).

  • Copyright-Free or No Copyright means: You can use it BUT maybe need credit to the creator (not ok for your film)
  • Copyright-Free or No Copyright AND No attribution (credit) means: You can use it for your film!

To search the web on your own, choose copyright-free and "no attribution" with your other keyword(s)

  • For example: Dog* "no attribution" copyright-free

You might also want to add the file type to your search

  • For example: filetype:mov Dog* "no attribution" copyright-free
